Steps Forward

Remember A.D. Santos? He walked into Kansas City Rescue Mission about 13 months ago with no family, no job, and no will to live. He had recently lost his leg due to medical complications, which meant his days as a line chef were over – so he thought.

He stared at the ceiling in his hospital bed and asked Jesus to take him home.

But Jesus had another plan for Santos, and that plan involved KCRM.

Taken on as a medical resident here, Santos was quickly immersed in our community of care. He received spiritual counsel for his weary soul, medical attention for his amputated leg, and friendship from residents and staff alike.

And just like that, Santos began to revive.

He was given a new prosthetic leg provided by KCRM’s partner Steps of Faith. His family re-established connection after reading his story on one of our Facebook posts. (And people say nothing good happens on Facebook!) And Santos began to exude the joy of following Jesus.

Now, it’s time for Santos to move beyond KCRM’s walls. However, the great stories of KCRM don’t come to an end even when our residents begin the next phase of their journey. Santos says he will always carry this place with him.

“This isn’t a shelter; this is my house,” he repeats choking back tears. “These people are my family.”

Santos has moved in with his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. He has two jobs, he says: Officially, he has returned to his former employment as a line chef. Unofficially, he will teach his grandchildren about God.

We are proud of you, Santos!
